REMOVAL OF THE BARRIER. CONCESSIONS TO SHIPPING LINES. (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. 1 (Per Press Association.) Received June 4, at 11.10 a.m. Sydney, June 4. The Herald in a leader on the expansion of German shipping interests in the Pacific says: "But tor the protective barrier there would he an enormous market in Germany for our meat and'wheat. It would be difficult to believe the f,i'C(t that the present-day conditions of tariff can be maintained much longer, and it is a sign of the times that the Conservatives representing the landed classes are willing to abandon the veto oil the importation of primary products in the interest of the Australian steamship services. This is undoubtedly a quid.pro quo for the withdrawal of the subsidy and will be generous compensation, for if the Customs prohibition is once removed the activities of German shipping will be enormously increased.
