THE TIMARU DREDGE.
At a meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board last week the Chairman said they should seriously consider laying up tho dredge for six" months. Thejvork was costing far too much. ~" Mr Orbell endorsed these remarks, and said the expense of working the dredge was out of all proportion to the benefits received.
Mr Thew spoke strongly in favor of retaining the dredge for the present and said he was quite sure they would never be troubled by shingle going round the end of the eastern extension. Long before it reached there it would be ground up into sand and carried away. Mr Turnbull suggested that th© dredge should be laid up in the winter months, say from April next year. The -Chairman said the dredge was really only doing maintence work" now.
Mr Orbell said it was not worth while keeping the dredge going for all the results they were getting now. She should be laid up for a few months. Mr Tripp said that if they deferred a decision until next meeting they mifdit know definitely by that time whether Nelson or Oamaru wanted the loan of the dredge. On the motion of Mr Skinner it was decided to defer until next meeting the question of laying up the dredge. Mr Francis said they should be given an idea of the cost of laying up thedredge or of sending her-to Nelson or Oamaru, and they would then know where they were.
The Chairman said he would ask the engineer to give this information.
