HIGH COMMISSIONER'S REPORT

Tlie High Commissioner's cable, dated London, :23rd December, is as follows: The mutton market is firm, although there is a dull sale for all quantities owing to the Christmas at about the quotations already given. Canterbury ■lijd. North Island 4d. Lamb—The market is steady. The Argentine shipments have increased 100 per cent. There is no change ill prices. The beef market is firm, and the prospects are favorable. It is reported that the American chilled trade competition is at an end. New Zealand hinds 3ld, fores 23d. Owing to the demand for Christmas. Prices have declined. The demand is expected to fall off after Christmas 011 account of the high prices. Butter—The average prieo for the week for choicest New Zealand butter is 1:295, Australian 1255, Argentine 1245, Danish 136, Siberian 1225. The cheese market is firm, with a hardening tendency. The average price for tlie week for finest New Zealand is 70s. The hemp market is steady, with a better demand. New Zealand, good fair spot, £2O; fair grade, £l9 10s; fair current Manila, £2O 10s. The output from Manila for tlie week was 20,000 bales. The wool market is quiet but firm, with 110 change in prices.
