The century took two hours to' make. After luncheon Gunn started bv pullin- Cotter for three. A similar stroke later made Gunns total 50He had been in l?W minutes. Jleatl was verv slow, but, sparkled up later Mead was unlucky at 25, which took 05 minutes to make, as he was run out through Gunn refusing to respond to a call. Mead was more than half along the pitch, and had to return. Hill threw in smartly and Whitty took oil his bails before he got back. Hordera had Rhodes badly beaten with his first ball, which was hit up half way alone the- pitch. The fourth was tapped to Trnraper at sillv short-leg—an easy.
catch. Hordern had now struck the spot. Foster hit up his first ball oh the on side, but was safe. Then Gunn faced Hordern and hit out to a' ball which went straight to Witty at coverpoint, which he held. Gnnn had batted 170 minutes for 62, and scored four fours. Foster and Hearne played rautionslv for a. few overs, "then Foster opened oiit. and lifted one from Whftty to square leg into the ladies' pavilion. The next ball landed on the cycle'tract, and the third was a straight drive for a single. Facing Hordern, however, the Warwickshire captain was extremer lv uncomfortable, and poked two" overs. Then lie had a hit at a ball with a-lot of curl in it, which went high to Bansford at deep square-leg, and was an easv catch. The next ball Hearne skied to 'long-on, but- it landed safe. Hordern was now practically :nnplayable, and in every attempt to hit a ball it rose, consequently both Hearne and Woollev, who followed Foster held their bats still and allowed the ball to fall at their feet. Since luncheon Hordern had recorded 10 overs, 2 maidens, 20 runs, and 3 wickets. As the batsmen refused to hit Hill put Armstrong on, with Cotter at the other end, who cap-
tared "Woolley in his next over, Armstrong at first slip making the most brilliant catch of the match- The ball was almost on the ground travelling at lightning speed, and he just reached it with his left hand. After tea Hordern again bowled, but seemed to hare lost the deadly spot, and both Heartie and Douglas played him freely. The latter was almost a brilliant surprise, after the report of his slowness in the other States. 200 was reached in 204 minntes. The brilliancy was only temporary, however, for with Armstrong and Kelleway bowling, the srorinc: fell back to the old groove, although both were playing the correct fame. It was monotonous for the spectators. The next 50 were scored without special incident. Both continued to bat soundlv. giving a remarkable displav of defence. At- five minntes to sis Hordern bowled Hearne with a big leg break for 43, which took 142 minutes to" make. He scored five fours. The partnership with Douglas added 86. Play was then adjourned, the Englishmen wanting 175 to win and two wickets to fall. The attendance was 5700. AUSTRALIA. '„ ' _ First Innings 44, Second Innings *» ENGLISHMEN.
