Received December 21, at 9.40 a.m. Sydney December 21

Practically all the shipping companies have decided to increase the inter-State freight rates 5 per cent., but not tho passenger rates. Inquiries indicate that the arrangement hitherto existing between the companies is at an end, but it is not considered that a rate war is likely to increase the freights, which are regarded as extremely moderate considering the charges the companies have met.

Melbourne, December 21. Although the shipping companies' arrangements have ended, it is believed amicable relations still exist, for the tickets remain interchangeable.
