M.P.. the local organising secretary of the No-License League has received a letter from Mr l-0010 stating ! that the report in the Invercargill Times of tile speech at Invercargill was inaccurate. " , ■ Invercargill, .Tunc 2. In reference to the statement bv Mr Poole, M.P., that, in regard to Ins references to Waihi recently, he was misreported by the Southland Times, that paper says:—M r I'ooie was reported Ui have said: "Waihi at one time was a queer place, and it was not'safe for a woman to walk the 'streets there. The expectoration'was dreadful, and rudeness was rampant.' Under no-license such abhorrences liad vanished, and now Waihi was one of'the cleanest and prettiest towns in New Zealand, and was as safe as Invercargill in reaffirming Tio-lieenso' at the forthcoming elections." Tile Times reporter'maintains that this is an accurate account of what Mr Poole said, except that lie mentioned that the . danger to women was at night. The reporter also states that' Mr Poole, continuing, cast a serious reflection on a tneniber of the Waihi Band, which, if published, would have laid the paper open to a charge i f libel.
