WESTPORT RACES. (Per Press Association.) We.stport. March 17. The Westport Jockey Club's autumn meeting opened to-day. Rain fell in the morning and cooled the air and improved the track, which had been hardened by the previous protracted spell of dry weather. Results: Flying Handicap, 5 furlongs.—Redwing, 8.2, and Feathers ton, 6.7 (dead heat), 1; Merchantman, D.U, 3. Also started: Montague, Balmy Breeze, Jennie, and Colleen. A fine race, all the placed horses entering the straight on almost level terms. Redwing and Featherston ran a dead heat, witli Merchantman a bare half length away. Time, lmin 4 4-ssec. ' Stewards' Handicap, 6 furlongs.— Maria, 11.0, 1; Sultan, 9.7, 2; Subdue, 9.7, 3. Nine others ran. Won by two lengths. Time, lmin 21 3-ssec. Orawiti Handicap /Trot; li mile.— .
