;< BTJIMDING TO START IMMEDIX\ / - , ATELY.' By Telegraph.-sS-V, (From Our Own Correspondent.) «"*--. Wellington, October 17. Hon. D. Buddo, who is acting •Minister in charge of Mental Hospitals states that building will commence al 'most immediately at the central -mehta hospital site near Te Awamutu, in th< middle of the North Island. The plan -are well under way and operations an to be pushed on as expeditiously as pos sible because mental hospital accommo dation is extremely limited at present. . The new institution has a fine sit' of 5000 acres, and an ideal situation fettle buildings is to be found upon a hil 300 feet high gently sloping. Each divi sion of patients will have a separat building for their accommodation, buu i these "unite," as thev are termed, will ' all be at the 150 feet level on the hill •and connected with a light tramway along which the food will be distributed from a central kitchent Each unit is to be sheltered from view of the others by trees, and there will be an uninterrupted outlook over the extensive grounds. The scheme lias been so designed that it c;vn do useful work in its early stages and be gradually developed as the need grows. Able-bodied patients will find plenty of healthy and usefiil work on the farm, and it is in this direction of open air occupation that the institution will be of greatest value. Its head is to be Dr Crossby, formerly superintendent of the old Mount View Hospital. He is now in England on leave. During his absence he will inspect some institutions there which are I conducted on'the villa system.
