DEVELOPMENT OF THE UNION CO.
[By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.] (Per Press Association.) Received July 27,, at 9 p.m. Sydney, July 27. The entrance of the Huadart: Parker liner Zealandia- upon ' the CanadianAustralian service was celebrated by a luncheon aboard. There was a large gathering of shipping representatives. Mr Appleton, managing director of the Hnddart "Parker Line, said he and" Sir James Mills were proud of establishing the connecting links between the two gems in the Crown of the British Empire. They had no tenure of service, still they were in for better or for worse, and were going the whole hog. If. they got the mail contract they would endeavor to make the service a better one. Mr Whitson, replying to the toast' of the Union Company, said the directors always considered trade would follow the extension of its operations and they had endeavored to be always in advance of requirements and be up-to-date in everything. He thought that that policy-had been realised. As New Zealand had prospered so .had the company. Its red funnel.was seen not only in .New Zealand and the Commonwealth, but in far off London and Canada. It supported oxer fifteen thousand people. The service .offered a splendid opportunity for the development of trade between Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, but, more than that, it would link up the great chain" of routes which covered the whole British Empire.
