LIVINGSTONE NOTES.
. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Monday night the people of Liv- ! ingstonc. or rather those who were hardv enough to face the rigor of an Antarctic 'winter's night, were well repaid by Dr Marshall's lecture on i geology." That gentleman gave a very lucid "explanation of the formation of : the earth's crust, the cause of volcanic i eruptions, the theory of earthquakes, ' and of the formation of the deposits of 1 green sand so extensively mined at Liv- ' ingstone and Maerewhenua. Dr Mar- ■ shall is so well known that comment as to his ability as a lecturer is not neeex- - sarv. suffice it to say he lias the happy ; knack of keeping his audience interest- • od in his subject (a quality by no means common in lecturers), and was listened 1 to with marked attention, and should he find time to pay us a visit on some - future occasion the Doctor will be sure > of a warm welcome by those who were 1 privileged to hear his lecture on Mon- ;' day night. ' The weather' of the last few days has been decidedly wintry, and if it con- ' tinues it will very soon put a stop to i all mining operations.
