Six lifeboats were launched and there was no panic. The captain and the majority of the crew were lost-, but 19 saloon passengers were rescued, including Mr Cunningham, English Vice-Consul at Osaka. It is believed that 109 steerage passengers and 59 soldiers were picked up or landed.
