TIMARTJ MARKETS. (Timaru Herald.) Business in the Timaru grain market during the past week has been characterised bv more activity than has been the case for some considerable, time. Though merchants have not opened out v=rv much, millers are operating freely, ind it is understood that fairly large cuantities of prime Velvet and Tuscan ikeat have come into the district from the direction of Ashburton. There is a big quantity of this class or crain in the stores, and the opinion is expressed by merchants that holders should quit" at first favorable opportunity. The cabled information received from Australia yesterday announcing a decided rise in prices will no doubt induce farmers to hold on, and the Timaru prices quoted last week — Dod-conditioned Tuscan 3s 3d. Redchaff 3s 4d. prime velvet 3s Sd per b;:shel. delivered Timaru, sacks extra —have not continued to appeal to holders. Farmers generally are showing some hesitation in selling.
