WRECK OF THE PERICLES.

Received April l', a* 8.5 a.m. '••:'.■.',•,' Sydney, April 1. ■ News was receded from Perth at an early hour this ,ni6rning that the- Aberdeen liner " Pericles had sunk oft Flinders Bay, Cape Leuwm. The crew is reported to be sate and to have landed in the vicinity of Leuwin Lighthouse. The Pericles was Homeward bound i with a full complement of passengers ! and a valuable cargo from Brisbane, Sydney, Hobart, and Melbourne.
Received April 1, at 9.55 a.m. Perth, April 1. The Pericles was noticed yesterday afternoon six miles south of Leuwin Lighthouse -flyhlrg .signals of distress. Her bows were well under, and the stern was high out of the water. Boats were leaving loaded with women and C The steamer gradually drifted closer in struck a rock, and sank three miles off Leuwin. "Meantime all those aboard had been stowed safely into the boats. . A later report from Karndale states that about 80 women and children, passengers by the ill-fated vessel, had arrived there from Flinders Bay, and were receiving every attention. Every house in Karridale is full of castaways. The women behaved splendidly, and there was no panic -or impediment to the work of rescue. The passengers and crew lost everything hut what they stood in. All are in good health. s ■ One boat put off from the wreck with three oars and no plug or rudder, but reached land steered with an oar. There are no details yet of the cause of the disaster. The scene of the wreck is a remote, unsettled part of the coast. A steamer left Bimbury last night for Flinders Bay to' take the castaways to Fremantle. Received April 1, at' 10.25 a.m. Sydney, April 1. The Pericles' Brisbane cargo included over 13,000 carcases of mutton and ' lamb, 100 quarters beef, 16,000 boxes butter. The Sydney cargo was 0000 bales wool, 10,800 carcases mutton and lamb, 15,000 boxes butter, 1250 crates rabbits, 250 tons wheat. The Hobart cargo was over 35,000 cases apples, 1119 cases preserves. The Melbourne cargo was over 10,000 carcases mutton, 300 bales wool, 424 tons wheat, 1050 boxes butter. - / Captain Simpson, commodore ot the Aberdeen fleet, wa> in command. It is a remarkable coincidence) that only yesterday the agents of the line were advised, that an order had been placed for tho construction of a sister ship to tho Pericles named the Mistocles.

[The Pericles was a- steel twin-screw 'four-masted steamer, built in 1908, by Harlaud. Wolff, and Co., Ltd. (Belfast) for Thompson and Co., Limited. Jhe vessel was 10,925 gross tonnage; length 500 feet 6 inches; breadth, &2 ieet 6 inches; and depth, 31 feet 1 inch.]
