THE WORLD'S SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

THE DOINGS OF BARRY

(From our Own Correspondent.) London, February 18. Hitherto I have said ""nothing of the race which is to take place on the Zambesi, as you have, no doubt been kept informed' by eabk\ But there are mauv little' incidents about Barry's training which will not reach yon otherwise than by the mail, and, as I am in . a special position to get such • particulars, I purpose sending now and again' any' reliable information which comes through. Ernest Barry is working hard on the Thames. Every morning', he is sprinting at Heme Hill, whilst in the afternoon he has a fifty-minute row at Putney. Ho is keeping his weight well* and has lost only two and a-half pound.-; since he started training last Monday week. His weight after rowing on January 31st was list lUlb, and since then ifc'has gradually lessened, and now stands at list 91b.' It is quite invigorating to see him after his training row. First Sullivan rubs him down with a Turkish towel with much energy and puffing. Then Barry "tubs," after which Sullivan has another rub at him. By this time Barry's flesh is as ruddy as one could wish! Barry will never, be a muscular man. to the eye, as he is loosely built. That is in his favor. Athletes who are "tucked up" become muscle-bound. Barry has a good soft muscle, and is a scientific oarsman. On Tuesday he rowed down below Cadogau Pier at Chelsea, and on Wednesday, after going to Wandsworth, he seulied through to Hammersmith Bridge, a distance of three miles. On both davs the water was dead, and at the finish Barry was tired. He is looking well, and is gradually hardening. He was in fair condition when, a little over three weeks ago, his training started, but now the soft flesh has alf disappeared, and given way to 'muscle. Sullivan is watching- him very closely. After Wednesday's rowing, he said that Barry was going on very well in himself and that there was nothing out. of the way to report. " He was trying to improve certain minor faults, but otherwise he was perfectly satisfied with Barry's progress. Big crowds have been watching him. do his training rows. Amongst the visitors'is-a Mr Malqueen, of Toronto. He is a supporter of Eddie Durnah, the Canadian -champion, - who some ' years'a*o defeated Sullivan, but- was himself "beaten'by Towns. -Durnan recently invited Arnst- to pay a visit to Toronto, but has not yet had a reply.
