AN EXPLANATION. HOCKEY MATCH PLAYED AT DUNTROON.

To the Editor. Sir,—ln your issue of August 23rd your Kurow correspondent, among other notes written by him, referred to the hockey match played at JDuutroon on the 21st ult. He stated that the match was played between teams representing the Kurow and Duntroon Hockey Clubs. As a member of the club which opposed the Kurow team, I thought-it advisable to make an explanation. The club which sent the team to play Kurow on the, above, date was the Tokarahi Hockey Club, there being no hockey club in Duntroon (at least there was not up to the date on which the above-mentioned match was played) ; but as the match was played at Duntroon I suppose, he naturally thought that the opposing team were members of a Duntroon club. He also stated that the Kurow team lost the game by one point. Quite right in one sense of the word—if a goal counts one point good and well. The way in which your correspondent put it it might mean that the Kurow team scored any number of points, and the winning team one more. But tbat\is not so, and for the benefit of readers I will give the correct result—viz., Tokarahi, 1 goal; Kurow, nil. The game was keenly contested throughout though Kurow was at a slight disadvantage in having to play against a mixed team from Tokarahi. But as wo were the Challenging team, and had not enough lady players on our side, we advocated a mixed team to play a mixed team from Kurow, and unfortunately for themselves they sent a full ladies' team, so had to suffer defeat. If, as your correspondent says, the Kurow Club expects to put up a big score at the return match, I for one' will not grudge them their win, and if they do beat us we can only say as-Wellington said, "A victory is only better than defeat." In conclusion, I hope that the young folk of Duntroon will at least benefit a little by the matches played there, and that they will-.try to form a. club-in Duntroon next season.—l am, etc., SEC.
