A "WIRELESS" HERO. Received August 30, at 8.20 a.m. New York, August 29. The American steamer Ohio was wrecked at Steep Point, Alaska.. Eccles, the wireless operator on the vessel, was drowned with four others. He stuck to his post until the room was flooded and his message brought two steamers, which rescued 134 iieople from the wreck.
Received August 30, at 5.20 a.m. London, August 29. A correspondent recalls the rescue, of the Dutch barque Dordrecht, which was missing for several weeks oil the South African coast in ISB4, and her position was just as hard to locate as that of the Waratali.
THE MISSING LINER. Adelaide, August 30. . Received August 30, at 10.20 a.m. Arrived —Ayrshire. She' kept a lookout for the Waratali, but saw no trace. Perth, August 30. An officer of the steamer Madura, from Delagoa Hay, states that the east-north-east current hasjtaken an extra-' ordinary southerly set. Seeing that there were strong northerly winds prevailing at the time of the mishap, he believes that the Waratali, if disabled, is drifting southwards and is now making towards Australia in a very southern latitude. THE WAIPARA. Received August 30, at 10.20 a.m. Brisbane, August 29. . The salvage, of the cargo of the Waipara is proceeding. It is feared much meat has been spoiled.
