OTIRA DIFFICULTY.
(Per Pkess Association.) Christchurch, August 29. The position at Otira is unchanged. To-day the men are receiving their first "strike" pay, which is being paid as from the 16th instant, the da..y on which work ceased. The time of the conference with Mr Murdoch M'Lean is not yet definitely fixed, but it will probably be on Sunday afternoon. The men are very hopeful that an offer to return to work on the old conditions, pending a settlement of the dispute, will be accepted. The township is quiet, and the good conduct of the men continues. .Mr' P. Hally considers the prospects of a setlement very favorable. SETTLEMENT REACHED. Vv T ellington, August 30. The Labor Department has been advised that a settlement of the trouble at Otira has been arrived at through the intervention of Mr Hally, Conciliation j Commissioner, and an agreement will be signed this afternoon.
