ECHO OF THE PENGUIN DISASTER.
(Per Press Association.) Wellington, August 30. A deputation representing the surviving passengers and crew of the Penguin waited on Mr "W. M'Menamin at Island Bay yesterday and presented him with an address . and a silvermonnled pipe, in recognition of his kindness on the night of the wreck. It may lie remembered that it was at his station, near Terawhiti tiiat the survivors were welcomed and cared for. The Arbitration Court has before ft to-day a number of claims for compensation arising out of the wreck of the Penguin in February last. The claims generally were admitted, the only question being the amount of compensation in the case of Albert Geo. Lusemore, third officer, in which the Union .Company agreed to pay £SOO to the Public Trustee for the benefit of the widow, and the ease of the claim by the parents and brother of Walter Kentoul, another engineer. Mr Justice Sim said that when the Court was properly constituted by the appointment of a successor to the late Mr S. Brown, the employers' representative, it would probably make an order on the basis of £135 and costs. Aii order was made by consent for the payment of £207 to the mother of Francis Driscoll. second officer. The Court stated that in the case of the claim by the mother of the late Mrs Hope, a stewardess, it was prepared to make an order for £72 compensation if necessary. His Honor was informed that, several claims had been settled out of Court. The hearing of other claims against the Union Company was adjourned till I Thursday. I
