PALMERSTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) After a week of dull cloudy weather a welcome change has. come in the shape of a steady warm rain from the northeast. The" rain commenced on Thursday night and has kept on with hardly a stop f-ji' the last twenty-four hours. An inch u£ rain has already fallen, and there is everv prospect of a thorough breakii]) in the dry weather, which threatened to become serious. I'ht l'almerston Lawn Tennis Club, of which lioiiiiiiLT was heard for several ec-a-scns, has again sprung into life with the construction'of a new asphalt court. The -round, which adjoins the bowiing green, ,s centrally situated, but- much has stiil to be done in the way of fencing and oLher improvements. As cricket is practical!" dead in this district, tennis should prove" a decided attraction to young people, and with our line dry climate it .should be possible- to beep up practice through the winter months. The"people of this-district hare responded most liberally to the appeal made on behalf of the starving poor in the great cities of England. A "sum of £2O has been already forwarded to Uunodin, and there are some lists still to come in. Taking into account the sums voted by the various friendly societies, the amount contributed by this -district should amount to considerably more than £oo. The local School Committee recently submitted the question of having religious instruction given to the children attending the school to a vote of the parents, when a large majority declared themselves in favor of the proposal. The Revs. Clarke, Webb, and Campbell offered their services, ami a commencement was made on Wednesday morning, when upwards of a hundred children were present.
