Oamaru Borough Council.

i 'The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held last night, when there were present, his Worship the Mayor Ichair), Councillors Taylor, Brown, Frith. Miller, Clarke, and Snaddcn. The- minutes of the previous meeting and of a special meeting appointing members of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board were confirmed and outward, correspondence approved. Messrs James Craig and Co. wrote in regard to an old wooden stable at the leick of premises lately occupied by T. Kennedy, stating that it was a perfect lire-trap and asking that it .be removed. Resolved that a. reply be sent to the effect, that the Council cannot interfere in the matter. It was resolved that the Gas Committee have power to act in regard to putting in additional gas plant. Messrs J. and T. Meek wrote in reference to payment for grubbing of fence, and the matter was referred to Reserves Com mitteo for power to act. The Secretary of the Waitaki High School asked for permission to use the Town Hall for the prize distribution on December 16th. Reply .been sent to effect that theatre could be let only at schedule rates. | Dr Garland wrote reporting a case of j scarlet fever. i The Mayor of Wellington wrote asking l if the Council would contribute towards t, I presentation from the people of the J)o- ---| minion to the Don. W. Hall-Jones on the ! occasion of his leaving to take up the duties of High Commissioner. Reply sent to the effect that the Council could not subscribe anything towards the object. Mr W. J. Hill and eight other ratepayers asked that the Council put down asphalting on the footpath in 'Porridge street eaM.. the requisite money having been paid on .March 10th. Engineer to be asked to carry out the work as early as possible after the holidays. 'i'he caretaker of the baths asked that 60 feet of hose .be supplied to wash outthe dressing rooms.—Request granted. Mr Jasper Xicolls and 14 other ratepayers of I're, Hull, and Greta streets, lying south of Test street, called the attention of the Council to the insufheiency of the water supply, stating that although the Council had been approached upon the subject last year nothing had been done to improve the service. During the present drought those who lived at the southern end of the above streets were receiving a mere dribble of water, and it; seemed "unfair that while the ratepayers were paying full water rates they were only supplied inadequately. They asked that steps be taken to remedy the grievance complained of. Councillor Brown said Mr Headland ami Mr Bulleid had asked him if something could not be done to improve the water service supplied to ratepayers in their neighborhood. Mr Bulleid said he had no wafer for three days, and could obtain none until he asked Mr Breen to turn his water off. Mr Headland, said that in three days he had obtained .-only:- enough water to "half fill his bath. " The Mayor said an adequate supply would not be obtained until proper pipes were laid down. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the Waterworks Committee with the Engineer for report. The Works Committee reported as follows: Recommending that Mr J. Williams .Im.- paid 50s for the work he had done on part reserve I), and that Mr Chalmers, the lessee, contribute 2Cs of the amount. The Committee had no further recommendation to make respecting Mr Concher's application. The Committee recommended that the piece of land applied for | bv the Ambulance Association next the Fire Brigade Station be offered at auction for a term of 21 years under the usual conditions. Till! last clause was deferred until a fuller meeting, and the report with this exception was adopted. Tlie. Gas Committee reported recommending tliat the matter of altering the position of the lamp in Ghelmer street lie left with the gas manager, and that a lamp be erected at the comer of L're and Test streets. The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £340 lis were passed for payment. The Finance Committee recommended that Mr Eiumetfs application for sick pay be made retrospective, and that consideration of the question, of staff holidays lie held over till next meeting.—Report adopted. The By-laws Committee reported that it had no recommendation to make respecting the sweeping of footpaths.— .Adopted. The Town Hall Committee reported' recommending that Councillors Taylor and Kevs report- on the cost of coating a por tioii of the Town Hall with linseed oil and white lead ; that the Mayor and Councillor M'Adam report on the alterations required in the proscenium and switch platform; that the Town Clerk write to the secretary of the Waitaki High School Board that "the rent of the Opera. House for the break-up ceremony would, be £5 ss; that the Town Clerk write to the managers of all municipally owned theatres asking if they would be prepared to insist on the advertised scale of admis sion fees being adhered to by visiting companies. The report was adopted. It was resolved that Mr Mathias be empowered to impound cattle. It. w-as resolved that tenders bo -called for cutting grass on Takaro Park and on the Gardens, to tie in by Tuesday night. Permission was granted the following for erection and additions to buildings: A. Bennett, section 12, block 15, North street; J. F. Joll, Test street; J. F. .Toll, loose box, Wharf street; A. Bennett, Chetmer street: W. J. Beswick, Tweed street: A. Bennett, stable, Chelmer street: D. Ximmo, Eden street. Mrs' Renwick applied for a domestic water supply at Waiareka, —Granted. A vote o'f thanks was passed to Mr TT. Mackintosh, secretary of the Acclimatisation Society, for his services an obtaining the swans for the public gardens. A discussion ensued on the suggestion to obtain birds to stock the Gardens, and it was decided to approach the Acclimatisation Society in the matter. The Engineer reported as follows : '•.Since mv previous report- to you, the laving of the main for the water supply to Waiareka has been completed to the salevards gate, as originally contemplated, the "total cost of which has been £452' 9s 6d, or £l2 10s 6d under the estimate. Up to the present five consumers are connected with the supply, the pressure of which is about 131b per square inch at the top of the hill at Awamoa, which may be considered as fairlv satisfactory. "The daymen are now engaged an clearin"- the grass, etc., from the channels and footways throughout the town, after winch the-top-dressing of the footpaths will be proceeded with.
