Alida Loman.
We need scarcely Tcmind our readers that this charming singer will I give her first recital in G'amaru this, evening, Her tour of the South Island promises to be as successful as that of the Xorth. Her first concert in Dmiedin was an unqualified success, being given before a. mest enthusiastic audience, which filled his -Majesty's Theatre to overflowing. Speaking of this concert the Ota.go Daily Times "Madame Lomati is the of a, singularly fresh and sympathetic voice, very even, very pleasant in. tone, quality, and of ample power ami range. Add to this tbe fact that she uses it with great professional skill as well as with all the art that characterises the true musician, and that her. personality helps her methods, and the results achieved are naturally of peculiar excellence." It is indeed a great and rare opportunity to -hear in tin's country a singer of European mark while still in the prime of her fame and- voice. Madame Loman, however, is not ' only a charming singer with a voice that reaches the heart, but she- also sings at.each concert about fifteen! songs, varying in style from the lofty oratorio to English and •Scotch simple folk songs, and she captivates and delights: the musical and nonmusical section of her audience alike ; hence her popularity. Herr Bemio Schcrek has engaged ,Mks Aiiine Tharkesay as violinist, in place of Mr Herbert Bloy, who had l to retire owing to illhealth. Mr Eric Anderson contributes baa? soiks, and Mr Scherek piano eo!o6. The programme which can be seen at Meldrum's provides an unusual treat suitable to all sections of the audience. Altogether to-night's concert promises to be one of the most successful and popular entertainments given here, and the public of Oamaru owe a debt of gratitude to Herr Benno Scherek for bringing his worldrenowned star to this city.
