DUNEDTN. December 12. Arrived—Ship Canterbury, Captain Collingwood, from Glasgow. The roaidenco and store of T. Simpson, at Shag Point, was destroyod by firo this morning. Tho house was insured for Ll5O in tho Standard, and LSO in tho Imperial, while tho stock, and furniture wore* insured la tho Standard for LIOO. Lord Ranfurly arrivod in town from Melbourne thla evoning. During his stay in Australia ho visited his property at Mildura and found things in tho irrigation colony in a thriving and prosperous condition. In South Australia he vißited various industrial Bchools and homes.
At a sitting in chambors bo-day a summono for the discovery of tho free assets in oonnootion with tho liquidation of the Ward Farmers' Association was argued. The matter had boen beforo tho Court previously in anothor form. It was an application to secure tho payment out of the estate of the oostt o! and inoidontal to an inquiry before the Oourt. It was held that the debonture holders oould not bo charged with the inquiry, and as tho debentures wore apparently a charge upon tho wholo ot the assets, no fund was forthcoming for payment. She summons argued to-day was to have certain Bums arising from the profits on the working stores, made available. The decision was resorved.

The Arbitration Court this morning gavo judgmeno on tho legal points argued the previous day in the grocers' dispute. The employees had objeotod that grooers' assistants nob being persons engaged in an industry within the meaning of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, could not rogister as an industrial union, that the certificate of registration was therefore null and void, that if the corrifioate was nob null and void it did nob confor upon members of tho union tho right to havo an award between thom and the employees, and that the employers wore retail grocers morely, and nob ongagod in manufacturing or business of an industrial charaober within tho meaning of the Acb, and that, thorefore, they were nob Bubjeot to itß provisions. The President said ho did nob think that, according to the popular sense in which the words "industrial matters" wera used, they could be understood as including tho trades of retail traders, and ho did nob think that the diapnbo bebween bho grocers and their assistants would, in popular language, be roforred to as an industrial dispute. He pointed out that shopß wero not named in section 27 of tho Aob giving power of inspection, and that ib waa improbable that if it had been intended to bring shopkeepers and shops within tho Acb all referonco to shops would havo beor\ omitted from that section. In his opiniou ib had not been mado out in the present oaso that tho persons sought to be aCfeotod oamo within the juiißdiction of tho Court. Ib was, however, still open to the Union to tnovo the Supreme Court for a mandamus to the Arbitration Court to hear the disputo. Tho romainder of the day was oooupiod in hearing evidenco in the builders' dispute, tho Court reserving its decision. Tho sarutlneoro in tho Riacarton election aab from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. this morning. The result is still unsottled, as several disputed points havo yot to bo docidod. It will probably taka two or throe days before tho issuo is definitely sottlod. For tho second of tho sorles of local wool aalos, whioh opens to-morrow, 12,877 bales havo boon catalogued.

Ronpootlng tho disappearance of Captain Oloaen, of tho barquo Agra, his boat was discovered yestorday on Fitzgerald's Spit, about throe miles from the ship. There cannot bo any doubt that he was accidentally drowned. Ho le&veß a wife in Poragrund, Norway, having married three months before his departure from Norway. HU wife was to have met him in Liverpool on Ilia arrival there. The boat had evidently capsized through the main sheet having bocomo fast. Whon found tho boat was half burled In tho sand, but there were no traces of tho body. Tho sea was too rough for tho soarohora to remain and look for tho missing man. It aeoma only too clear that tho unforaunato oaptain has been drowned through tho capsizing of the boat. December 12.
John Cullinano, who attempted to commit Buioldo at Hamilton, has boon committed for trial. Ho had L4O on him when arrested.
