Mr H. F. Farmer, British Vice-Consn at Boulogne, presented on October 16th her Majesty's gift o! L4OO to the father of the French fisherman Loth, who was accidently shot o2 Dungeness last August. The meeting (the Standard's correspondent says) was held in tne Salle des Mariages, and was attended by the Mayor, several town councillors, and some English residents trom Boulogne and Etaples, besides inhabitants from the small fishing town. M. Delaporte, Mayor of Etaples, begged the "Vice-Consul to lay at the feet of his gracious Sovereign the sincere expressions of gratitude and tha thanks of the entire population of Etaples, and said that her kind" act would go far to alleviate the oain nnd grief chat the unfortunate Incident had caused amongst the people. Mr Farmer replied, and then handed over a cheque for 10,000 francs, In the Queeiis name. Loth, who Is a man of about 00, was moved to tears by the proceedings. Being quite illiterate, he affixed a cross as his signature to the recßipt, which was countersigned by the Mayor and one o£ his councillors. Mr Chamberlain has announced a donation of L 20.000 from Mr Charles Holcroft, Kingswinford, near Dudley, towards the proposed University for Birmingham.
