Magistrate's Court.

THIS DAY. (Before Major Keddell, S.M.) Joseph Kench, alias Woods, was charged with breaking a pane of glass in the Empire Hotel, valued at L 3, with being drunk in Itchen street, and with using obscene language in the bar of the hotel.

The accused admitted being drunk, but denied any knowledge of breaking the window. He might have fallen against it. Jas. Smith, barman at the hotel, stated that he refused to serve the accused, when he abused him with disgusting language. Witness put accused out and he then deliberately smashed the embossed glass in the front door. A. Direen stated that he saw accused deliberately smash the glass with his billy. His Worship sentenced accused to 3 months' hard labor—2 months for the damage and 1 month for the bad language, A little girl, on remand, was charged with stealing a pair of shoes, valued at 2s 6d, the property of James Gebble, on 31st October.

Mr Harvey appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty, and Sergt. O'Grady prosecuted. After hearing evidence, his Worship dismissed the case, remarking that there was not even evidence to place suspicion of theft upon the accused.
