Howard Smith, claiming L 3700 damages for the sinking of the Manawatu, began in the Vice-Admiralty Court today. There is a strong bar on each side. Sydney, October 3. Reports from the New Hebrides state that a party of marines from the French warship Eare, while proceeding to punish the natives under a native guide, were ambushed. The guide was shot dead, and several marines wounded. The party retreated, taking their wounded with them. Received October 4, at 1 a.m. Melbourne. October 3. Arrived—Weuona. from Thames. She encountered stormy weather. Her deck cargo was jettisoned. Several of the crew were injured.
