The Americans are insisting on the immediate evacuation of Cuba; The insurgent Assembly at the Philippines request that the group be declared independent, excepting an American protsctorate over external affairs. The American troops at Honolulu have been ordered to Manila. London, September 24. Lord Selborne, writing to the Dean of St. Paul's, eulogised Sir George Grey's geniu3 for administration, nobility of character, and purity of aim. Sir David Tennant (Agent-General of Cape Colony), Messrs Reeves, Cock burn, and Witternoon (Agents General of New Zealand, Sou f h Australia, and West Australia respectively) will officiate as pallbearers. Mr Curzon, Governor-General of India, has been created an Irish peer. G. F. King Adams, of the Wellington University College, passed the Indian Civil Service examination with credit. Received September 26, at 0.45 p.m. Berlin, September 24. The Emperor, in opening the Stettin Harbor, where large additions and Improvements have been made, remarked that Germany's future lies on the water. AUSTRALIAN NEWS? (By Electric Telegraph—Oopyj igh .) (per united press associates.) Received September 25, at 5 p.m. Sydney, September 24. Sailed—Monowai. Sydney, September 25. Sailed, yesterday Auckland. Melbourne, September 25, Sailed, yesterday— Tarawera, for the Bluff. The steamer Arawatta collided with the China steamer Ching Tu in the Yarra. The latter was struck amidship, and considerably damagad. The Arawatta then ran into a lighter, and also carried away a portion of the wharf. Adelaide, September 25. M'Donald. a telegraph operator, cycled from Port Darwin in 28& days, a week ahead of the record. Received September 26, at 0 40 a m. September 25. The steamer Ea.press has been repaired, and resumed her voyage to Napier. Brisbane, September 25. Mr Byrne's condition is grave. Received September 26, at 9.15 a.m. Sydney, September 26. Mr Wrigge predicts stormy weather between New Zealand and Sydney, during the next two days. Melbourne, September 26. A man named Archer has been arrested In Melbourne for the Slrathmerton tragedy. Accused admitted being in the company of the murdered man Matthews about the date of the murder. Matthews and his mate were collecting opossum skins. On the 18th inst. a man giving the name of Archer sold a horse and cart near Strathmerton and came to Melbourne, where he disposed of a quantity of skins. Received September 26, at 9.20 a.m. Sydney, September 26. Mr J. B. Reid's three recently purr chased racers were shipped by the Monowai. Melbourne, September 26. A man named Slattery has been pentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for the Penshurst Bank robbery. A widow named Marian Robertson was found dead, covered with blood, in a house at Collingwood. A tomahawk was found near the body. A man with whom she had been living has been arrested. They were seen driaking and quarrelling together.
