The Parliamentary vacancy for SouthEast Durham, caused by the murder of L!eut.-General Sir Henry HavelockAlien on the Indian frontier, resulted in the return, by a majority of 275, of Mr Joseph Richardson, a Liberal, who formerly represented the constituency. A mail train collided with a fast goods train at Barassie, Ayrshire, Scotland. The two engines, two carriages, and three vans were smashed. Seven passengers were killed and many injured. Bekun, February 5. America has intimated to Germany that her action in forbidding the importation of American fruit without notifying Mr Uhl, the American Ambassador, is unprecedented. A man, giving the name of Alfred John Hickey, has been arrested on a charge of having a revolver in his possession in the gallery of the Gaiety Theatre. He was remanded for medical examination. When arrested, a letter, written in an incoherent style, was found in his pocket. In it are mentioned Sergeant Hampton and Dr Cleveland, of Adelaide. London, February 5.
Rough January accounts, prepared by the Receiver-General's Department in connection with the Canadian-Australian mail service, show banking liabilities at L 68.000 and free assets at LIO.OOO. The Receiver says the Company will need to continue the business.

German students at the University of Prague, the capital of Bohemia, having been prohibited from wearing their club colors, the students throughout the AustroHungarian Empire, to express their sympathy, refused to listen to the professors.
