(by telegraph.) (per press association.) WELLINGTON. January 18. Dr Newman, who is about to visit the Old Country, was presented by his supporters with an illuminated address. Sir R. Stout, Messrs Hutchison, Menteath, and others spoke at the dinner given on the occasion, and a resolution was passed that it was advisable that the Opposition be more thoroughly organised. Dr Newman said he did not intend to give up politics because he was defeated. The Premier will leave on Thursday for the Hobart Conference.
It is stated that the cost of the Ruapehu mishap is L6OOO, and that tho Union Company receive L 2500 as their share.
DUNEDIN. January 18. A petition having, it is understood, been forwarded to the Colonial Secretary in favor of granting a license to the railway refreshment room at Clinton, in the Clutha district, a counter representation has been forwarded by the officers of the Clutha Electoral Prohibition League. The mining returns are : Sew Hoy Big Beach Company, 450z 7dwt gold : Otago Dredging Company, 21oz 2dwt ; Golden Gate Dredge, 370z; Golden Treasure, 220z; Upper Waipori, 340z (two dredges) ; Jutland Flab Dredge, 21oz 12dwt. AUCKLAND. January IS. Arthur o : Field, charged with embezzling LIOO, the property of the Kauri Timber Company, was remanded for eight: days. Bail was allowed of L4OO. The annual accounts of the Auckland Harbor Board show revenue L 38,346, an increase of L 2069. The total receipts were L 42,887, an increase of L 5413. Deducting refunds from the above the Increase in receipts for 1896 was L 632 on the year's operation of L 3390. The theosophical crusaders have abandoned their southern tour till next year and leave by the San Francisco steamer.
