(by telegkaph.) WELLINGTON. September 12. The Hauroto, from Sydney, was signalled this afternoon.

AUCKLAND. September 11. The question of having women as members of the Education Board was discussed at a meeting of the Women's Political Reform League, and the name of Mrs Thomas, wife of Professor Thomas, was suggested. The matter was postponed indefinitely. The Education Board have adopted a series of scholarship regulations submitted by Inspector Petrie, those in force having been found to be faulty. Inspector Petrie's report respecting the trouble at Henderson's Mill School was to the effect that the teacher was efficient, but her husband, who was a storekeeper, associated with a party to which the present School Committee was opposed. He could not advise the Board to remove the female teacher. Consideration was deferred.

Robert Rose Forsyth has been committed for trial on a charge of embezzling Ll4. Bail was allowed. The contractors' engine reached Rotorua yesterday, which means complete railway communication between Auckland and Rotorua. September 12. Arrived Alameda, with the 'Frisco mail, after a smart passage.

PALMERSTON NORTH. September 11. A disastrous fire occurred here this afternoon at 4 o'clock by which the premises of Bett (coachbuilder). Smith and Hall (stable keepers). Wood (blacksmith), and Browning and Tory (coachbuilders) were totally destroyed. The total damage is estimated at L 3500 and is covered by insurance to the extent of LISOO as follows L6OO in the Victoria, L 250 in the Standard, LIOO in the Alliance, L 550 in the New Zealand. Three horses were burned. All the vehicles in the coachbuilding establishments were saved.

GISBORNE. September 12. A very sudden death occurred last night when Dr Burnaby, American lecturer, was seized with a fit of coughing, and expired within ten minutes. He was staying at the Royal Hotel.
