The Recent Prize Fight.
The inhabitants of Jacksonville have not distinguished themseives. In order to attract money to their town thoy permitted a prize fight, with the result that the town was given up for several days to the wild orgies of the roughs of the entire United States. In nine minutes the fight was over, Corbett having knocked Mitchell out of time. This was regarded as a glorious victory of America over Europe. I am, rather glnd that Corbott won. Mitchell was. not precisely a citizen of whom we have any reason to be proud. His chief exploit here was to thrash an old man who had offended him. Corbett may or may not have indulged in similar exploits, but if he has, they are nob known. Public opinion here is against these brutal exhibitions. But this has not long been so. I was in the House of Commons when the great fight between Sayers and Heenan took place. It was on a Wednesday. No one thought of what was transpiring in the House. Everyone was talking of the fight and hanging round the telegrams from the scene of action. When we heard that Sayers had not won we were greatly depressed, and we only recovered our good spirits when we learnt that he had fought for some time with one arm disabled.—London Truth.
