A Fire and an Arrest.

(by telegraph.) Ashburton, February 13. On Friday morning, shortly after midnight, the shop of Andrew Black, jeweller, in the principal block of the town, was found to be on fire by the constable on his beat. The brigade were quickly on the spot, and the members and constable extinguished the fire with buckets of water without the fire engine. Considerable damage was done to the stock by the heat, and a disastrous conflagration was only prevented by the absence of ventilation and the promptness of the constable. This afternoon, after an examination of the premises by the police and the insurance inspector, Black was arrested, and will be charged with arson.
