September 21.

At Greytown North a meeting of residents was held to consider the imposition of exchange on cheques by the banks, and passed the following resolutions : 1. That the exchange upon country cheques hinders industry and commerce. 2. That the following should he the bank exchange districts in the colony: Auckland, Hawke's Bay. Taranaki. Wellington, Canterbury, Nelson, Wcstland, Ofago, and Southland ; and that exchange be only charged between thixse districts and not within them. 3. That petitions to the banks be circulated in different districts in order to assist in giving weight to the opinion of this meeting. The crops in the Wairantpa are looking well, and the season is said to be the most favorable for six years. Nearly LISO has been collected as yet for the evicted tenants in Ireland. At the annual meeting of the Shipmasters' Association to-day the report showed that the Association began last year with a membership of 00, and nou there were I'll financial members, only 24 of whom are officers not holding masters certificates- The balance in hand was L2t>B. The Association passed a resolution sympathising with Captain Logan in regard to the recent grounding of his vessel, and offering to pay any expense he was put to by the inquiry in Melbourne. Some discussion took place on the case of Mr C. F. Poste, who had been debarred from going up for his masters certificate through the peculiar way in ■which the Board of Trade regulations were interpreted by the Marine Department of New Zealand, and it was decided to obtain the opinion of the Board of Trade. Captain Johnston was appointed one of the vice-presidents in place of Captain Edwin, resigned. DUNEDLN September 21. With refeience to the telegram re the finding of the body at the Aucklamls Mrs EckhotF, on beingseen, thinks it improbable that the body is that: of her late husband. She has not yet received the buttons mentioned. but she says that the only article described which corresponds with what her husband had is the seaboots. She is surprised Mr Me'Jish never noticed that Eckhoff had the end of the third finger deformed, by which the body could be at once recognised. On the muscles of the upper portion of the left arm were his initials in large letters. The inquiry into the alleged '"ringingin " in connection with the recent coursing meeting was concluded to-night, when it ■was decided to disqualify from training or coursing -f. Forward, of Christchurch. and also the bitch Kathleen Mavowrneen. otherwise Lady Lynton. and all concerned are to be notified to this effect. It was the unanimous opinion that the evidence for the defence had been given in a very unsatisfactory manner. Mr .Justice illiams to-day gvanfed a warrant for the arrest of Bernard M'Kernan, a bankrupt, on the irround that he ■was about to quit, to defeat or delay proceedings. AUCKLAND September 21. In the case of Lovett v. the Hospital Board, LIOOO damages for alleged unskilful treatment of a leg in the hospital, the jury awarded L 250 and costs. The medical evidence was remarkably conflicting. The legal point whether the Board is liable for the action of the medical superintendent, Dr Callings, has yet to be argued. Mr Bryce was interviewed by a large number of Auckland residents, who took the opportunity to express to him their sympathy with him in his present position after the recent incident in the Assembly, which led to his resignation. He iroes to Hamilton to-morrow, and leaves himself in the hands of his late constituents as to addressing them. INVERCARGILL. September 21. It is not probable that the body found on the Auckland Islands was that of Eckhoff. Others of the sealing party state that the beard remaining on the upper part of the throat was decidedly ruddy, whereas Eckhoffs beard was grey. NELSON. September 21. At a meeting of the Acclimatisation Society to-night, it was resolved to obtain three roebucks and six does, also rooks and opossums, as well as to expend another LOO in future in stocking the rivers with fish.
