EXTENDING A BAD LIFE.
(BY TELEGRAPH.) (FROM OtTR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, July 19. The motion for going into Supply on Friday night was intercepted by Mr Tanner, who moved that, in the opinion of this House, it is undesirable that a general election, through effluxion of time, shall take place before the next cenBUB is taken, and that the Government be requested to bring In a Bill to give eftecfc to this resolution. He said that unless some other provision were made, the Parliament would expire by effluxion of time on October 5 next, which would be an exceedingly inconvenient time for holding a general election, seeing that shearing would then be going on all over the country; but a more important reason was that, if the elections took place before next April, they must be held under a distribution of seats based upon the population of five years ago. Mr Hobbs, having seconded the motion, the acting Premier said that he, to a certain extent, was with Mr Tanner's amendment, seeing that there had been a great increase in the population of the North Island ; but, at the same time, the Government did not see their way to accept the amendment, and they would vote against It. On the motion being put, it was negatived by 64 to 6.
