♦ . (by temobaph ) Hastings, January 3. The Hon. the Native Minister left here for Waipatu where a native meeting took place on Saturday morning. He was received with the nsoal Maori welcome and war dance. About 500 natives were present. Speeches were made by several of the chiefs, who expressed great pleasure at seeing the Native Minister. In replying, Mr Ballance said he recognised the loyalty of the Hawkes Bay natives and indeed all natives. He agreed with what had been said, that it was desirable the Native Minietir should meet the natives and discuss with them all measures wmoh affected the race before they were passed by Parliament, and it was his wish to do sol- , . The addrecs of welcome was signed by the chiefs of the numerous tribes and Eapvs. No further business was done on Saturday as that day was set apart for speeches of welcome.
