LARGE FIRE AT WAIPAWA.
(BY TEIEORAPH.) Napieb, January 4. A terrible confl-icration broke ont at Waipawa at three o'clock this morning. The fire commenced in a small cottage near the river and between the railway line and the main street.- The flames spread rapidly to a block of small shops, and from these to the Empire Hotel outbuildings. These, together with the hotel, were soon totally destroyed. The fire, still proceeding along that side of the street, the Bank of' New Zealand was the next to go. Telegraphic communication with Waipawa has been cut off. Up to. the present ten shops, the hotel, and the' bank have been destroyed. . A special train has just been despatched with a eteam fire-engine and the members of the brigade. It is reported that the Post and Telegraph Office has been burnt down, and that the flames have now spread to the other side of the street. The insurances on. the Empire Hotel were—On the building. South British, L 75 0; New Zealand, L 50 0; National, L 250. On the stock and furniture, Union, L4OO ; Norwich Union, L 200; London and Lancashire, L 35 0; National, L 250.
