The bank rate of discount is 4 per cent., and' the market rate 31 per cent. The total reserve in the Bank of England in notes and bullion amounts to L 16,500,000, being an increase during the week of L 600,000. The proportion of reserve to liabilities is 47 per cent. There is no change to report in colonial fcreadstdffs or tallow. The wool market is quiet. Arrivals to date for the next sales amount to 14,000 bales. . The Shaw-Savill and Albion Company's steamship Tainui left Capetown on the 22nd inst., bound for New Zealand. Received February SS, at 11 a.m. London, February 28. A fatal catastrophe occurred to-day at Shoeburyness. While some gunnery experiments were proceeding a Bhell exploded, and an officer and gunner were killed on the spot, and four officers are severely injured without any hopes of recovery. A dividend of ten shillings in the £ has been authorised In the Oriental Bank estate. Berlin, February 2G. The European Conference on West African affairs closed its sittings to-day. Sugar Company's No. 1 pieces remain at L 26.
