BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.

The first monthly meeting of the new Committee of the above institution was held last evening, when there were present—Mr. G. Greenfield (President, in the chair), Revs. A. B. Todd and W. Coleman, Messrs. Stevenson, Mollison, Evans, Grant, Milligan, Ogilvie, Hislop, and M'lntosh. On taking the chair, the President shortly addressed the Committer Ke said he felt strongly the hojaor done him in appointing him ta the position he was called upon to fill, and trusted that when his year of office was out it would be found that he and the Committee had worked harmoniously together. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence approved. The Society at the late general meeting having expressed the opinion that Rule 20 should be altered ov expunged, the Committee held a long discussion on the subject, and finally, on the motion of Mr. Fleming, seconded by Mr. Stevenson, it was resolved, " That it is desirable to amend the rule by the insertion of the words ' for the Home' after the word ' supplies' in the first line, and by omitting the last clause of the rule •" and it was resolved to call a special meeting of the Society to confirm the amendment as early as may be convenient. The Hon. Treasurer made an elaborate address on the financial position of the Society, and the following excerpt from, being of general interest as regards the future, we publish it : Having thus referred to the office of Treasurer, and its position to start the new year, I would briefly refer to the ordinary and expenditure of last year. I do this h> order that your Committee may he better prepared to provide for the present financial year. The ordinary reoeipts for last year from all sources as per balance-sheet were L 697 4a Id, and composed of the following items :

Subscriptions and donations £913 6 6 Subsidy , 205 15 6 luterest ... ... ... 32 12 1 Reitf 110 0 0 Fee? (registry)-... ... ... 100 0 0 Qhildren's ..maintenance repayments ... ... ... 25 10 Q £697 4 1 Against tliis I find the ordinary expenditure amounts to L 934 2s lOd, and made up of the following items, which I have set down as first and second charge^. The first charges are composed of all n'ecesi sary expenditure "in management, and gecnwd of all items of contribution are as follow, viz. :—• Ist Charge. 2nd Charge. Belief distributed ... £466 1 0 Twelve months' rent Municipal lease ... £6 Q 0 Salaries ... ... 140 Q 0 Commissions, ifrc. ... 2S| ft 3 Advertising and stationery ... ~, 28 5 1 Petty expenses ... 6 8 2 Ingurapce on Home 4 5 0 Lease Severn-street land_ 23 7 6 Provisions at home and coal account... 231 6 10 £236 15 0 £697 7 10 Total Ist charge for management ... ... ; ... £236 15 0 And the 2nd charge for relief ... 697 7 10 Resulting,in a deficiency during the twelve months of 236 18 9 From the foregoing accounts, atndfroiq the present outlook as to requirements for the present year, I would urgently recommend your Committee to anticipate quite as large an amount being required for relief and the home during the present, as was demanded j during the past twelve months, viz., L7OO ; in fact, my judgment would lead me to ask your Committee lo provide for- L9OO —for I find that the expenditure for the month of October was L 65 2s 2d. Although the amount of relief required may fall during the summer and early part of autumn, a greater- amount will undoubtedly be required during the next winter. On the "motion of Mr. J. H. Milligan, seconded by ]VJr. Mollison, it was resolved to open again the Servant's Home on the same qoriditjohSj and under the rules and regulations previously existing. Mr. Fleming gave notice of moving at the next meeting, "That the office of master and collector be united,"

The resignation of Mr. Mirama as a, member of committee was accepted. A long list of cases for relief wero then dealt with, and Messrs. N. Fleming, B, Mollison, and R. Stevenson, wero np„ pointed to be the Yiaiting Committee for the month. Accounts to the amount of L 75 193 6cl were passed for payment, subject to the usual examination, and the mooting closed.
