The principal light-keeperat Cape Campbell reports that a party of three men left that station on the 29th ult. in an open boat, to cross to Wellington. It was blowing fresh from the south-east with- a heavy sea, and fears are entertained for their safety. The men's names are Frank Mori, Christopher Hanson, and Franz Ptolomai.

DUNEDIN. December 2. A trial was made to-day at the Telegraph Office, of the Edison and Bell telephone apparatus, which has been fixed up fo; the benefit of the publig, The experiment was perfectly successful, and from results it is evident that, by this system of sending messages, a great boon will be conferred on business people and others. Telephones will be placed in offices or private residences within a reasonable distance of the chief telegraph office, and they will be connected with the apparatus at the chief office, by which a subscriber can cause himself to be placed in telephone communication with the office or the resir dence of any other subscriber and be thus able to converse with persons at those places. All necessary arrangements for bringing over the Australian cricketers have been completed.

December 3. Foul Play and Natator have been scratched for the Puneclin Cup. At the Oity Court, Mr. Wm. Strachan, brewer, for neglecting to affix stamps on five hogsheads of beer, was fined L2O for each cask and the beer forfeited. A like information against Joseph Kuhtz was dismissed. Two publicans, for receiving the unstamped beer, were fined 5s each with costs. Mr. Watt held that lie had no power to mitigate the fine against the brewer.

CHRISTGHTJRCH. December 2. The Lyttelton Harbor Board to-day accepted a tpnder from a Glasgow firm for a graving dock caisson at LSI 44.

The Customs revenue collected at the port of Lyttelton for the month ending November 30 amounted to L 12,070 7s 9d.

NAPIER. December 2. It is currently reported in town that the late Messrs. Stokes Bros., of Melbourne Station, near Kailjoura, have willed the bulk of their property, valued at 14(30,000, to London Hospitals.
