| WELLINGTON. November 17. A proclamation in the Gazette further prorogues Parliament to the Ist of March. The Hon. Mr. Bolleston returned to Wellington to-day. November 18. Dr. Diver and Messrs. Hutchison, Youncr, and Divan were nominated for the Mayoralty to-day. DUNEDIN. November 18. Thomas Hardy, alias Smith, an invalid prisoner working in the Botanical Gardens,
feigned illness, arid while the warder's attention was directed to the other prisoners he effected Iris escape, and still remains uncaptured.
CHRTSTCHUKCH. • November 17. A fire occurred at Crisis Lodge at 3 o'clock this morning, whereby Mr. Horsford (Dr. Priui) had a narrow escape of losing all liis valuable stud of horses. A servant happened to awake at the time of the outbreak and at once gave the alarm. The horses were all saved, but the saddlery and other property, to the value of L2OO, were destroyed. Mr. Horsford was uninsured.
'J.he only.candidates nominated for the Mayoralty to-day were Messrs. Ayers and Gapes, the latter of whom has already occupied the civic chair. Notwithstanding the numbers of young trout sent away, the Acclimatisation Society have 13,000 or 14,000 still left. Owing to the hot weather, the mortality has been much larger than usual.
A man named Thomas M { Callum was fined LlO to-day for deliberately riding another man down at the raeeoourse. Dr. Prins said it might be several months before the injured man recovered the use of his shoulder.
A deposit of nearly pure plumbago of considerable extent and in a veiy accessible position 1-os been found in the Malvern Hills. Another good seam of coal has also been found there.
The total attendance at the Metropolitan Show was 17,300. The takings from all sources were LIG96 7s Id. November 18.
A shearing match took place at Rolleston yesterday between B. Jellet.t and J. Burton. The conditions were 100 sheep, L 25 a-side. The former won easiiv, the time occupied being 5 hours 43 minutes.
AUCKLAND. November 18. The new wing of the Lunatic Asylum is almost completed. The Auckland Scripture Gift Association aent a memorial to the Hon. Mr. Rolleston asking permission to put up in public schools large placards with the Lord's Prayer and Commandments. One hundred and fifty prospectors are at Te Aroha. Many men are going from Waikato. The native: jdemand an instalment of LIOOO before consenting to open the field.
NAPIER. November 17The Harbor Board has seut Home to Sir J. Vogel a draft for the purchase of a Toneye dredge. Judges Fenton and O'Brien, Dr. Buller, and others leave in a. piivate coach to-morrow morning for Rotorua. The Land Court will open at Taupo on the 29th inst. The most important of the claims for hearing is the Kungipo block of 100,000 acres, in the occupation of Studholme, Morrin, and Co. Dr. Buller will appear for Topia, Turo, and the Taupo claimants, and conduct the case of Major Kemp and the Wanganui claimants, while Messrs. Sheehan and Moorhouse will attend in the interests of the European speculators. Thp tribes are preparing for a large muster at Tapuaehururu, and two judges will sit.
GRAHAMSTOWN. November 18. A proclamation re the Te Aroha goldfields appears in this evening's paper, stating that it will be opened on the 25th inst., at 9 in the morning. A son of Mr. Swanson, the member of Parliament, was bound over to keep the peace under a penalty of LIOO, for fighting.
