THE MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.
(PER STEAMER AT THE BLUFF.) Melbourne, October 6. There is little to add to the accounts of the opening of the Exhibition, which were fully telegraphed direct. There is a general feeling of congratulation at the complete success of the ceremony, which was not lessened by the really fine display of exhibits. Everyone was unanimous in the opinion that the fine arts exhibits far surpasses anything previously. seen in Australia, especially the British and Belgian. The Melbourne Club on Monday entertained the Governors of "Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania. The Duke of Manchester and Commodore Wilson were also present, and ninety others. Numerous festivities are now being held. On Friday Sir Samuel Wilson entertains 500 guests in the Town Hall, including the foreign, intercolonial, and Victorian Commissioners and others. It was intended that the Strauss Band should give a first performance! to-morrow at the Exhibition. This has fallen through, and it is now announced that negotiations have t been broken off, the Executive Committee deciding yesterday not to engage the band until more satisfactory arrangements cQiild be made. The band, which i) urubers 62 performers, arrived by the j Aconcagua, gives its first performan.ee at the Flemington Racecourse on Saturday, when a procession of 150 ragehorses will be formed, the jockeys in colors. Other events, including a. g?eat banquet on the 12 th in the Town Hall, given by the Commissioners in honor of the Foreign and others, will take plaoe. The Governors are expected to be present. It is proposed to hold a grand conversazione at the Exhibition building, Mr. Cracknell, Superintendent of telegraphs for. New South W'ajes, offered to illuminate it wi,th the electric l>ght. The Marquis,- of Normanby's message to the Queen, on the Ist October, was sent from Melbourne to Balmoral in 23 minutes. The Prince of Wales-also replied to the Marquis of Normanby's telegrams, saying that he was very glad to hear that everything went off so well. The Government are now considering t&e proposals to hold a military 9it an early date. The naval commanders in tl\<j bay have offered assistance. Probably a sham naval fight ! will bes arranged between the vessels now ;in tho harbor, the field force co-operating. BSast Ballarat has invited the Governors arid suites, and also the judges, the officers of the men-of-war, the Commission,er3, and others, to visit their town at an early date. The work at the various, courts is now being carried on. it expected that the Exhibition wili be completed within less than a, nion,ch. The attendant© on Moniday numbered 650.0, yesterday 2700 only, I exclusive of with passes. The guests of the Governor are frequent 1 visitors to the various courts.
