The services of 12 of the Constabulary Inspectors are' to be dispensed with, but nothing more than-this can be said, as the names of such have not been decided upon. DUNEDIN. October 7The trial of Ah Lee and Le Guy for- the Kygbprn vpurder was commenced this morning at the Supreme. Court. Mr. Rowlatt defended the former, and Mr. Macdermott the latter. The prisoners' counsel challenged seven jurors, and the Crown one. The trial is likely to extend into next week, as the work of interpretation proceeds slowly. Later. The counsel fop the defence haying agreed to dispense with interpretation, the case will be very much curtailed. CHRISTCHURCH. October 7. There are 100 children now in the Orphan Asylum, Seven thousand trout were sent north by the Tairoa ou Tuesday. _ They are principally intended for stocking rivers in Taranaki. AUCKLAND. October 6. It is rumored here that in the changes in the constabulary, Sub-Inspector Pardy of Auckland and Sub-Inspector Kenny of • the Thames will be dispensed with, At a special meeting of the Waste Lands Board, it reconsidered its former decision, and agreed to sell out of the Aroha block 17,600 acres to Messrs. Foster and Grant, at the valuation of Mr. Percy Smith, the Chief Surveyor—33s to 34s an acre, subject to the former stringent conditions of introduction of immigrants, erection of houses, cultivation of land, residence thereon, and mode of deferred paymsnty, Steel, as representative of Messrs. Foster and Grant, agrees to the arrangement, also to the introduction of 225 adult immigrants. Foi'ty*f}ve families are to' be settled on the land six months after arrival, The imperial pensioners complain bitterly of having to pay duty under the new Stamp Act for receipt of imperial pensions. Staff Sergeant-Major Speight protested against it as illegal, and told Colonel Haultain that he forwarded a protest to the War Office on the ground that an Act of the Colonial Legislature could rf°P overrule tiie Act pf the Imperial Parliament, under which soldiers are entitled, WANGANUI. . October 7. At a general meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club, it was unanimously resolved to retain the servioes of Mr. IJately as handicapper, and not to join the other colonial clubs in appointing one handi? capper for the Colony, Mr, Hately's ability and uprightness were warmly eulogised by the speakers at the meeting. NAPIER. October 6. The Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Show opened to-day. As usual, the first day was wholly devoted to the exhibition and judging of ghepp. ' prizes for long-wool Were both taken by Mr. Tanner, of Hastings, for rams bred by himself; Mr. Douglas M'Lean took champion cup for merino rams with one of Mr. James Gibson's breeding ; and Mr. Godden that for merino ewe, with sheep of h'a own breeding, s<he exhibits in long : wool shqwpd a falling off, but in merinos there was an increase.
