POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
(by telegraph.) (prom our own correspondent.) Wellington, August 9. The news of the appointment of Sir Arthur Gordon as successor to Sir Hercules Robinson has created feelings of disappointment in the minds of the Ministry and their supporters, and has revived the hopes of the Liberal party, as Sir Arthur is a thorough Liberal and a strong opponent of land-sharking. No provision is made in the Public Works Estimates for either a Railway Station for Custom-house at Oamaru.
It was generally believed that the session would close at the, end of the month, provided the order paper is relieved of three-fourths of the business, but since the delivery of the Public Works Statement doubts are expressed, which have created universal dissatisfaction. Other important discussions must come on before the session closes, amongst which are taxation, the Public Works Estimates, tho West Coast Commission, and the Positive lands administration. _ The Public Works Estimates display the most perfect contempt for Oamaru. The vote of L 2500 on the Estimates last year for a Courthouse, and. that of L6OO for the Post have disappeared, whilst the votes for Courthouse, Invercargill, and Post Office, Timaru,. are retained. • The Minister will be pulled to pieces over his estimates, and serve him right. Later.
Mr. Jones waited on the Premier today, and complained that the whole of the votes for pubiic buildings in Oamaru had bee& dropped. He asked whether or not it wa3 possible to reinstate the amounts. The Premier replied that as there was only a small amouixt in hand, it would have to be spread over three years. The Government were compelled to exercise exceeding care ; that they had struck out all suoh votes ; and that in the case of similar votes appearing on the Estimates the money had been already expended. Mr. Shrimski also waited on Ministers during the morning, but the result of the interview is not available. It was probably the same. The Premier to-day announced the abandonment for this session of the Town District, Fisheries, Education Reserves Amendment, Public Entertainments, Prohibition, Cemeteries, New Zealand University Reserves, Canterbury Rivers Act Amendment, Auctioneers, Fire and Marine Insurance Companies, Gaming and Lotteries, Hawkers and Pedlars, and the Peace Preservation Bills. Tha following are to be passed if possible at morning sittings ;—The Counties Act Amendment, High School Reserves, Joint Stock Companies Act, 1860, Amendment, Dogs Registration, Brands and Branding, Fencing, Impounding, and the Rabbit Nuisance Bills. The Premier said it would be necessary to pass the Property Assessment Act Amendment, the Beer Duty, the Deceased Persons Duties, the Local Public Works, the Rating Act, 1876, Amendment, and the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Bills.
