August 8. An official inquiry into the management of the Industrial School at Look-out Point has commenced. There are now 259 children in the school, which is overcrowded. Eider Batt, a Mormon apostle, addressed an audience of sixty persons to-day. AUCKLAND. August 7. Miss Garthwaite has been awarded L 1650 for damages caused to her property by the Kaipara railway running through a portion of it. The claim was L 2510. LSO costs were awarded, August 9. The Imia, which arrived from Russell last night, reports a large fore-and-aft schooner ashore at Tutukaka, the head of the craft being high on the beach. She presents the appearance of having ridden ashore on the top of a large wave. It is believed to be the Fleetwing. CHRISTCHURCII. August 9.
Dr. Hacon, late Assistant Physician at the Warwick County Asylum, has been appointed Resident Medical Superintendent of Sunnyside Asylum. A public meeting has been held at |Kaiapoi to protest against the action of the Acclimatisation Society in trying to Btop net fishing in the Waimakariri. The Minister of Marine, replying to an application from the solicitor for the crew of the Anna Bella, said he could not interfere nor advise the Governor to order a prosecution under clause 153 of the Shipping and Seamen's Aot. The Collector of Customs, who previously stipulated that the men's wages should be paid, gave the vessel her clearance, on the men's clothes and effects being given up. The vessel sails to-day. At a quarter past 12 yesterday, smoke was observed issuing from the roof of the western portion of the railway Btation.
It was discovered that Mr. Back's office was on fire. The fire originated in the room below, a large hole being burnt in the floor near the chimney, and another in the ceiling immediately above. A large quantity of papers were removed, and an alarm given. The flames were speedily extinguished. It is supposed that native coal in Mr. Back's office had been smouldering from the previous evening. The furniture in both offices was more or less injured. The damage is estimated at less than L2OO.
GRAHAMSTOWN. " " ' August 9. The body of the man Otter, who mysteriously disappeared some days ago, was found in Kaneranga Creek yesterday afternoon. It is supposed he committed suicide. He was very eccentric, having some time ago gone to England without saying a word to his family.
