THE LOSS OF THE SCHOONER JANE HANNAH.
The accompanying telegram from the captain of the Pelican may be of interest, as showing the cause of the -wreck of the Jane Hannah. It will be remembered that the Jane Hannah and the Pelican left here together on Friday week, and, as will be seen by the telegram, were together until Sunday afternoon, when struck by the south-east gale. The position of -the vessels would be about 6 to 10 miles off the land about the mouth of the Rangitata River, The Pelican evidently had enough to do to weather the Peninsula, only clearing it by two miles. The other vessel doubtless could not manage it v and hence the disaster. " Waitara, July 14.—The Jane Hannah was 4 miles south of me on Sunday 4th at 2 p.m. The Pelican was 60 miles south-west by west off Akaroa, when struck by the south-east gale. She managed to pass Akaroa about midnight 2 miles off. The gale was terrific.—J. Muniio."
