(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION'.) WELLINGTON. May 19. At the Divorce Court this morning a decree absolute was made in the following cases :—Cooper v. Cooper, Wellington ; Reynolds v. Reynolds and Wilson ; Joynt v. Joynt.

DTTNEDIN. May 18. It is stated on reliable authority that the Permanent Building Society will suffer no loss through the sudden departure of J. S. Webb, the manager. A woman named Agnes Hnrst, the wife of a carpenter, was admitted to the Hospital yesterday afternoon. She was suffering from the effects of poison, having taken about three-fourths of a packet of Battle's vermin-killer with some meat a few minutes before. Emetics were at once applied, and she was soon pronounced out of danger. Hurst states that his wife had been in a desponding state for the past few days. The parties were married in February last, and it is stated that they had not lived happily. May 19.

The Tipperary Company at Arrow have crushed 417 ounces from 550 tons of stone.

Mr. Finn has addressed the Arrow olectors. He advocates extensive reductions in the Civil Service.

At the District Court at Tokomairiro, Isabella Hamlyn was acquitted on the charge of concealement of birth. On Petrie's farm, Maungatea, the whole season's crop 3 were destroyed by fire. No insurance.

CHPJSTCHURCH. May 18. There are loading in Lyttelton at present by the New Zealand Shipping Co. twelve vessels with a tonnage of 10,092, equal to 14,000 tons of grain. The cutter Hero, telegraphed from Wellington as missing, is lying in Port Levy, together with the Aspasia for Napier, and the Ocean Bird for Picton. The first meeting of the Canterbury Coursing Club was held at Malvern today, 40 miles from Christchurch. The first round of the Derby Stakes was run off, and one course of the Oaks. The weather was beautiful, but hares were not plentiful. The meeting will probably last all the week.

May 19. The Secretary of the Co-operative Land Company received yesterday a telegram from the Commissioner of Crown Lands sajing that the Government have ordered the temporary withdrawal from sale of sections 8 3 9, and 15, block 13, Ngarui district.

At a parish meeting held at Kaiapoi on Monday it was decided to hold a bazaar to raise funds to pay arrears of the curate's salary. In to-day's local papers Mr. Ollivier has a long pungent reply to the Drainage Board's manifesto.

TIMARU. May 19. The South Canterbury Education Board has yoted LlO to the new schools for tree planting, and smaller sums to other schools.

Complaints are made about the great reduction in railway charges lately made for the conveyance of coal from Lyttelton, enabling importers from Newcastle to undersell dealers in Colonial coal from the southern mines, who have to pay full rates for carriage.

NAPIER. May 18. May 19. Messrs. Thompson Brothers have discovered gold-bearing reefs in Tarawera County, 20 miles north-west of Napier. They have secured a protection order from the Government over a claim of 400 by 200 yards.

AUCKLAND. May 18. The settlers of Whangarei at a meeting resolved to urge the Government to set aside land in the north of Auckland districts for the construction of a trunk railway nortb. It was also decided to frame a memorial from the local bodies to Parliament.

It is not expected that the Aucklaud Members will leave for Wellington until Monday or Tuesday week. The late rain has caused a great silting at the incomplete railway reclamation works. The entrance to the dock is rapidly closing. Much apathy is shown in the registration of the electors in all the Auckland electoral districts. At the Thames and Rodney chief districts the number of electors on the new rolls is less than those on the old roll.

May 19. The Bishop of Melanesia leaves on Friday for Norfolk Island. The Harbor Board yesterday resolved to communicate with the Hon. Mr. Brassey, President of the Board of Trade, with a view of urging the facilities in Auckland for a coaling station and depot for the South Pacific ; also to forward Dr. Hector's report on coal deposits in the north.
