WELLINGTON. April 17. A proclamation appears in the Gazette calling Parliament together for the despatch of business on the 28th May. The barque Portland from London arrived this afternoon after an eventful passage of 106 days. During the voyage the steward, named Edward Bowick, committed suicide by taking carbolic acid. He had been drinking heavily prior to the event. He was 35 years of age and is believed to be a native of London, DUNEDIN. April 19. At the City Police Court to-day, May Carroll was charged on a warrant from Oamapu: with larceny as a bailee. The prisoner said her name was Alice Carroll. The Magistrate, holding that the warrant was informal, dismissed the oharge without prejudice. CHRISTCHURCH. April 18. In the Christchurch Football Club's match on Saturday, a player named Hay broke his leg in two places above the ancle. He was attempting to collar another player who had- the ball, but the latter held his grasp and Hay fell. The collision was not very violent, but both were heavy men, and it was probably in falling that the limb was broken. Hay was carried off the ground to a doctor's near at hand, and the limb was attended to. He has lately come here from Invercargill, and is in the Civil Service. This is only the third tinie an injury as serious has occurred in Christchurch, and in no instance was the accident the result of any rough or violent play. AUCKLAND. April 17. Pour men have been sent to gaol for figging gum on private land. Madame Camillo Urso gave her first Goncert last evening in the Choral Hall to an enthusiastic audience. TIMARU. April 19. The several perjury cases against M'Leish arising out of the seizure of of sheep some weeks ago have been abandoned. At the Court to-day a woman named Graff whose husband is up country proceeded against one Jonathan Allpress for assault. The case excited much amusement. The prosecutrix alleged that on Thursday last Allpress called at her house for a small account, and as lis failed to get his money he forcibly extracted a kiss. Allpress stoutly denied the. alleged endearments, and the ease had finally to be adjourned till tomorrow to enable Mrs. Graff to produce corroboratory evidence.
