The Gazette expects that constitutional reform will-be now carried unopposed, The Morning Post has a leader upon the result of the elections, and expressed much satisfaction at the defeat of the Berry Government. March 3. The Times, in a leading article of this date, referring to, the defeat of' Mr. Berry on his appeal to. the country, strenuously advises Victorians to refrain from any extremes, and recommends them to pursue a policy of moderation, which will advance the progress of the colony, and deprive Mr. Berry 'of any plausible excuse for appealing to popular passions. Much anxiety was felt in St. Petersburgh on the 2;n.d jnsfc., owing to the threatening announcement of the Nihilists that they would signalise the twenty-fifth anniversary of the accession of the Czar by burning down the capital. Precautions were taken by the police, and the day passed over without any overt acts.
