WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The monthly meeting of the County Council was held to-day, -when there were present—Messrs. D. Sutherland (Chairman), Duncan, Falconer, Murcott, W. Sutherland, and Thomson. Mr. Oliver, engineer, was also present. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. Messrs. Hector Morrison (Otepopo), Wm, Sutherland, jun. (Duntroon), Walter Worley (Teaneraki), and Norman Lane applied for renewals of their slaughtering licenses ; and Mr. P. Wheeler applied for a license to slaughter on section 7, block
1, Oamaru.—The Clerk stated that he had granted the renewals in accordance with the resolution of the Council. Mr. Wheeler's application was granted. Letters ivere read from the Treasury, intimating that the following suma had been placed to the county's credit : Goldfields revenue and gold duty, L 24 8s 4d ; fines and penalties, L 4 10s ; land revenue, L6O 19s sd. Mr falconer, referring to the land revenue, said it was manifestly unfair that revenue received from this source should be allocated to the riding in which it was raised. Some of the ridings thus received advantages to which they were not entitled, inasmuch as the land in some of the ridings had been sold, and the money expended upon general purposes. He certainly thought the fairest way was to divide the land revenue amongst the ridings pro rata. The Clerk said the land revenue was allocated to the riding in which it was raised in accordancee with a resolution of the Council. Mr. Falconer said that had the meeting not been so thinly attended he would have moved to rescind the resolution. Mr. Murcott said when the proper time came he would give notice of motion to have the resolution rescinded and the the land revenue divided pro rata amongst the ridings. A letter was read from the UnderSecretary forwarding a copy of the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Bill introduced into Parliament last session, but not passed owing to pressure of other business. This Bill will be rc-introduced next session, and the writer invited suggestions from the Council on the measures.
Mr. A. Anderson wrote asking for LlO from the vote for libraries, for the Awamoko library.—Granted. Mr. James M'Lymont wrote applying | for the sum of L2O voted for libraries in the Kakanui riding, for the Kakanui library. —Granted. Mr. C. F. Roberts wrote on behalf of the Livingstone Library Committee applying for L2O voted for libraries in the Otekaike riding.—Granted. Letters were also read from the Ngapara and Waiareka libraries with reference to the library vote for the Waiareka riding.—lt was decided to divide the vote of L2O between the libraries. A letter was read from the Crown Lands Commissioner, intimating that the survey plan of the road line through the Crown lands adjoining Section 7, block 2, Maerewhenua district, had been handed to the Chief Surveyor for record. The petition from a number of residents on the North road, praying for the formation of a footpath on the east side of the road, again came up for consideration, and was accompanied by a statement of the revenue received from the property situated within one mile of the North Town Boundary. This showed the sum to have been over L 133, while it was stated that the. expenditure had not exceeded Ll2. A report npon the matter was read from the Engineer, giving an estimate of the Co3t of the work. It was resolved,-after a little discussion, to call for tenders for the formation of the footpath on the east side of the road as far as the Cricket Ground. The Clerk laid on the table the valuation roll for the outlying districts, and it was resolved to apply to the Road Boards for copies of "their valuation rolls for the year. [Left sitting.]
