CHRISTCHURCH. January 8. There are 43 witnesses in the riot cases, and the proceedings are expected to take a long time. When sentencing the man Osborne, who was yesterday convicted of arson, and sentenced to six years' imprisonment for having set fire to an unoccupied store in Christchurch, his Honor Judge Johnston stated that had the premises set fire to been inhabited, he would have sentenced the prisoner to imprisonment for life. It is reported to-night that Osborne has confessed to causing several fires, two of which at least were very extensive. Edwards, Bennett, and Co.'s bonded store was one of them, and the lad appears to have been a perfect young Cyrus Haley. His demeanour in court was very impudent.
January 9. The Clydesdale entires which arrived from Glasgow per barque Remonstrance consist of one three-year-old for M'lntyre's Merino Downs Farm, Tapanui, and two two-year-olds for Paton's farm, Milton, Otago. They are all fine animals, and arrived in good condition. A telephonic concert is shortly to be given at Itarigiora. Nearly all the farmers of Southbridge and Lakeside districts have gathered in their hay with little or no loss. Now several machines are at work threshing grass seed, of which a plentiful supply is anticipated. So promising are the grain crops that in these districts the farmers are looking forward to a yield of from 50 to 60 bushels to the acre, as against 20 reaped last. year. A spring under the engine on the Lyttelton branch line broke last niglit, and, after a stoppage of half an hour, was patched up temporarily. On resuming the journey the patching gave way, and the engine left the metals, the wheels being buried to'the axles. The carriages remained on the line, but the passengers were much startled by the shock. They returned to Kaiapo.i, and then went home by buggies. An inquiry will probably be held into the cause of the accident.
The riot cases were opened this morning, but are tied up for the present, the panel being exhausted. The Crown challenged five jurors,.and the. prisoners' counsel fweiity-two. " The Judge ordered' the doors to be locked; but no rules being asked■ for, the r Judge adjourned ' the Court until 2 o'clcek, stating that he would communicate with other Judges in the' interval/ ' • ' ' " ' ' AUCKLAND. ' ■ t • January 7. The racehorses Loneharid,' iMarifcana, Templeton, Pinfire, and Lara.were shipped to Wellington by the Ringarooma this morning. . Ray and Vallance were passengers by her. Qolonel, Scratchley is a passenger ;by the Ringarooma. At the Supreme Court, Frederick Benjamin Duvell, charged with forgery and uttering a cheque for 30s, professing that as a medical man he receivod it from a patient, was sentenced to three years. It has transpired that the captain of the Cormorant applied to be* taken into the dock, but the application had been refused on account of the dock's limited dimensions.
While engaged in the work of raising the steamer Hannah Mokau at North Mokau River, Mr. Holliss discoviered the bowsprit of H.M.S. Orpheus, embedded in the sands. The spar,: which measured 34ft., had floated nearly a hundred miles down the coast. It was cut up and used in raising the steamer. One of the pieces will probably be presented to the Auckland Museum,'. An accident happened to Mr. Grant, the Lincolnshire delegate. The AttorneyGeneral was driving a buggy and pair, and lost hold of the reins. Mr. Grant jumped down, and while endeavoring to right matters, the wheel of the buggy went over him.
January 9. The Penguin lias arrived from the Sounds excursion. When passing Portland Island a passenger (Mr. Ashley) gave birth to a male child, -
A deputation of Mauku settlers waited on Mr. Whitaker, to urge the survey of a branch line from Pokeno to Mauku. The deputation stated that rough statistics would show that the line would pay. My. Whitaker said that the Government would not construct any further lines in the present state of the finances of the Colony, and that it was doubtful whether they could complete the lines undertaken. The Government would not take over any ,nlore branch lines. He asked the deputation to prepare statistics for the Minister for Public Works, who would shortly visit Auckland.
NEW PLYMOUTH. January 8. i Mr. Parris left by the steamer this morning for Wellington, the Government wishing to consult him on native matters connected with this district. GRAHAMSTOWN. January 8. At a meeting of th'e Templar Grand Lodge to-day the following officers were elected for the ensuing year : Bro. Johnston, Wellington, C.T. ; Bro. Jenkins, Auckland, Councillor ; Bro.
