RIFLE MATCH.
Otaoo v. Noi;tji Otacio. This match was fired at Dunedin yesterday, and resulted in a victory for the Or,ago Association. This is not to be .vondered at, for most of the North Otago men went to Dunedin by yesterday morning's train, and they had not time to recover from the shaking received during the weary journey over that very uneven and "sea-sickening" railway line. Several of our best shots, notably Quarter-Master Sergt. King, were absent, while the Otago Association had one of the strongest teams to be obtained in Otago. The conditions were 10 men aside ; ranges, 200, 500, and tiOO yards, with 10 shots at each. The day was fine, but the wind baffling. The shooting was nevertheless good. The local team left Oamaru by the first train yesterday morning, and had to procoed to the range a few minutes after arrival. The consequence wa3 that at the first range they were not in such form as to be able to hold their own against a team of men unequalled—as a team—in the Colony. After the first range had been finished, the North Otago men warmed to their work, but failed to overhaul their opponents. The following are the scores : OT.U;O ASSOCIATION,
Majority for Otago Association ... 5S In the evening the visiting team were entertained at dinner at Watson's Hotel by the Otago Association. Major Wales occupied the chair, and Lieut.-Colonel Stavcly was present. A number of loyal nnd military toasts were duly honored. During the evening the captain of the Otago team said—and it was endorsed by all present—that the shooting of hi 3 team at the 200 yards was exceptionally good, even for them. He expected, before the match commenced, that his team would win by 100 points, but the shooting of the North Otago team at the 500 and COO yards astonished him, and he congratulated the members of his team on obtaining such a strong lead at the short range. Otherwise the match would have been very close at the finish.
